Valiya Koonambaikulam Temple is one of the most ancient Devi temples in Kerala, dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali, popularly known as 'Koonambaikulathamma', the mother of Koonambaikulam. This Temple is a must-visit religious, spiritual, and tourist destination for all devotees and tourists of the state alike.

Daily pooja or temple worship starts early morning, the temple remains open on all days of the week during timings 4:30 AM - 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM, local time.

'Kumbha Bharani' or 'Kumbha Bharani Maholsavam' is the most important and famous annual festival of the temple. The festival is held on any day between February or March, in the Bharani Nakshatra of Malayalam month 'Kumbham'.

The 'Chandra Pongal' is another famous and important ritual of Valia Koonambaikulam Sree Bhadrakali Temple, the Chandra Pongal ritual is organized in connection with the annual Kumbha Bharani festival of the temple. Thousands of women are participating in the Chandra Pongal ritual, apart from women, thousands of people gather at Koonambaikulam every year for the Bharani Mahotsavam.

Koonambaikulam in Kollam, Bhagwati Temple in Kodungallur, and Pisharikkavu in Kozhikode were built around the same time. All these three temples have an important place in the cultural history of Kerala. All three temples are located at equal distances and they have the same distance from the sea.

The temple is functioning under the control of the Valiya Koonambaikulam Sree Bhadrakali Kshetra Trust. The trust owns an Engineering college called Valia Koonambaikulathamma College of Engineering and Technology (VKCET) at Parippally in Kollam district.
