'One nation, one ration' card scheme should be implemented by July 31, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has directed the state governments to implement a 'one nation, one ration' card scheme by July 31. The scheme is implementing to provide subsidized foodgrains to inter-state workers from all parts of the country.

The project aims to alleviate the suffering of thousands of workers, especially during the Covid pandemic situations.

The bench, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, directed the Central government to provide additional foodgrains to the states and prepare a registration portal for inter-state and unorganized workers in the country. The registration process is required to start before July 31.

The court also directed that the community kitchens should continue to function so that no workers go hungry during the Covid period. A bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan and MR Shah passed the order.

The court also reminded the authorities that the right to food is a fundamental right. The court's observation was based on directions submitted by Prashant Bhushan, the lawyer appearing for social activists.

Bhushan said before the court that the catering in the community kitchen in Delhi has been reduced this year and neither the Center nor the states have given rations to inter-state workers under the Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme.

This is big! Supreme Court orders the few states not implementing the Modi govt's #OneNationOneRation card to do so. Drastically cuts corruption & eases access to PDS food anywhere (eg 6m migrants being denied in Delhi). See the states (Delhi, Bengal, Chattisgarh) & you know why. - tweeted Baijayant Jay Panda

G Kishan Reddy, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Government of India tweeted "Hon’ble Supreme Court directs all states to implement “One Nation, One Ration” card by the 31st of July, 2021. This direction of the apex court will take us a long way in realising the fruits of #PMGKAY, through which the needy across all states will receive ration."

Sitaram Yechury of Communist Party of India (Marxist). had tweeted "The SC has pronounced that the Modi govt's apathy towards migrant workers is "unpardonable". It directed immediate implementation of "one nation one ration" scheme & to "run community kitchens to feed the migrants." Do this NOW."
