E-passports Only from 2021; for Indian citizens Printed booklet passports will no longer exist

Preparations are underway to issue only e-passports to Indian citizens from 2021. The Central Government is taking steps in this regard. The new system is aimed at preventing the production of fake passports and speeding up immigration procedures.

The Central will also look for and select a suitable agency to prepare the IT facilities for the implementation of the project. The country has so far issued 20,000 official and diplomatic e-passports on a trial basis.

According to some online media, e-passports will come with an electronic microprocessor chip. According to officials, the passport will be based on international civil aviation organization standards.

E-passports will be issued from 36 passport offices in India. Arrangements for this will be made available in all offices. A special system will be set up at the passport offices to issue 10,000 to 20,000 e-passports per hour and e-passports will be issued to new passport holders and re-issuers from 2021.

We can hope that the online application for e-passports will be launched soon.
