In this war Soviet Union, China, and North Korea supported North Vietnam and the United States, South Korea, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines supported South Vietnam. People from another country also admitted to fighting but not in their national army. This battle between communist and capitalist countries was a part of the Cold War.

The National Liberation Front, or NLF (Viet Cong), was a South Vietnamese red force helped by the North. They fought a guerrilla battle against the anti-communist forces in the South. The North Vietnamese Army (People's Army of Vietnam) involved in a major conventional war, at times putting extensive forces to battle.

France started to colonize Vietnam between 1859 and 1862 when they took control of Saigon. By 1864 they dominated all of Cochinchina, the southern part of Vietnam. France seized control of Annam, the large fundamental part of Vietnam, in 1874. Subsequently, France defeated China in the Sino-French war on 1884–1885, they have taken control of Tonkin, the northern part of Vietnam.
